Wild Huckleberries
No Longer Available
The USDA Forest Service canceled the commercial harvest of huckleberries in 2025. As a result, Trout Lake Grocery is no longer permitted to purchase or sell commercially harvested fresh huckleberries.
Nonetheless, we continue to offer a very nice selection of huckleberry products: jams, jellies, syrups, baking mixes, candies, candles, soaps, etc.

- Huckleberries are available by the gallon or quart. One gallon weighs 5 lbs. One quart weighs 1.25 lbs.

Selling Huckleberries?
- You must have a USFS Commercial Charge Use Permit to pick and sell huckleberries. Click here for permit information.

The History of Trout Lake Grocery
Serving Residents & Visitors Since 1895
By Cheryl Mack, Trout Lake Archeologist & Historian
Trout Lake continued to grow, and in the spring of 1903 a second store was built in the valley, by a man named Elbert C. Peets. Mr. Peets was a relative newcomer to the area, having moved from New York to Portland in 1900. He was likely drawn to Trout Lake by promotional ads that were frequently seen in newspapers at that time period, praising the economic potential of the area. Mr. Peets’ new store (what we now know as the Trout Lake Grange) was constructed between April and July of 1903. Mr. Peets did not remain long in the area, however, and later in 1903 he sold his newly built store to C. M. Wolford and Company, owner of a large department store in White Salmon. Wolford’s brother-in-law, a man named Otis J. Smith, was placed in charge of the Trout Lake branch of Wolford’s store.
The Hood River Glacier newspaper of Aug 20, 1903, reported: “The village of Trout Lake is a thriving one. Two stores carry a stock of general merchandise – the Chapman Bros., long established, and Messrs. Wolfard and Smith, the new men in the field. Both do a good business.”
But two stores were apparently not enough for the thriving town of Trout Lake, and sometime before 1910 a third store was opened in the center of town, at the corner of the highway and Jennings Road (across the road from the Grange). It was operated by George Depue and his wife Cora. Depue’s also ran a restaurant in their store.
In 1914 Claus H. Pearson (the brother of Trout Lake pioneer Charles Pearson) and his wife Amelia purchased O. J. Smith’s store (the Grange), as well as the J. F. Blew store (the present Trout Lake Grocery). Pearson consolidated the holdings of the two stores, and operated out of both as C. H. Pearson and Co. In 1918 he sold his interest in the Grange building to the Masons, although he continued to operate a store in the Grange building until his death in 1932.
After Claus Pearson’s death, his wife Amelia moved their store operation completely to the present Trout Lake Grocery location, abandoning the building we now know as the Grange. She operated the Trout Lake Grocery, with the help of her daughter Mrs. Thelma Spencer, until 1954.
IT WOULD BE GOOD TO ADD THE MEYER FAMILY HISTORY AND PHOTOS TO THIS. It could just be a continuation of this History section. Or it could be an entirely new About Us section.
